Don’t push the divers
A diver died yesterday on a mission to search for those still missing inside the sunken ferry off the southwest coast./ 남서해안에 가라앉은 여객선 내의 실종된 사람들을 수색하는 임무 도중 어제 한 잠수사가 사망했다/ The death of Lee Kwang-uk, the diver who came to Paengmok Harbor Tuesday on the government’s order to mobilize civilian divers for the rescue mission, makes us wonder if the government blindly pressed ahead with the campaign without considering divers’ safety at all./ 구조 임무를 위해 민간 잠수사를 동원하기 위한 정부의 명령에 화요일 팽목항으로 온 잠수사인 이광욱씨의 죽음은 정부가 잠수사의 안전은 전혀 고려하지 않은 채 구조 캠페인만 맹목적으로 밀어붙이는 것은 아닌가 하는 의심이 들게 한다/Lee reportedly lost consciousness five minutes after diving into the sea after being contracted by Undine Marine Industries, a private maritime salvage company on a contract with the Korea Coast Guard and the Chonghaejin Marine Company, which operated the ferry./ 보도에 따르면 이광욱씨는 해양경찰과 세월호를 운영했던 청해진 해운과 계약을 맺은 민간 해양구난회사인 언딘 마린 인더스트리와 계약을 맺고 바다로 들어간 후 5분 만에 의식을 잃었다고 한다/
Civilian divers have been risking their lives to search for the missing under the worst circumstances./ 민간 잠수사들은 최악의 환경에서 실종된 사람을 수색하기 위해 목숨을 걸고 위험을 감수해왔다/ The waters where the ferry sank three weeks ago are notorious for turbulent currents, high waves and ultra-low visibility./ 3주 전에 여객선이 침몰한 그 수역은 조류가 빠르고 높은 파도와 가시성이 좋지 않기로 악명이 놓은 바다다/ Even in such harsh circumstances, no divers have insisted on the rule calling for at least a 12-hour rest after a dive./ 그러한 어려운 상황인데도 불구하고 잠수사들은 한 번 잠수를 한 후 최소한 12시간은 휴식을 취해야 한다는 규칙을 주장하지 않았다/ And the desperate atmosphere on the spot does not allow them to follow even the basic rules for their own survival./ 그리고 필사적인 현장 분위기도 잠수사 자신의 생존을 위해 기본적인 규칙까지 따질 형편이 못 된다/Due to an excessive push, as many as 17 divers have so far received medical treatment for physical injuries or decompression illness from their life-and-death missions./ 무리한 밀어붙이기로 인해 지금까지 목숨을 건 임무수행으로 육체적 부상이나 잠수병으로 치료를 받은 잠수사가 17명이나 된다/
Even as a wide array of analyses attribute the unprecedented tragedy at sea to a fatal lack of safety awareness and systems,/ 바다에서의 전례 없는 비극이 안전의식과 안전 시스템의 치명적인 부재에 있다는 다양한 분석이 나오는 이 순간에도/ there are no manuals that can assure complete safety./ 완전한 안전을 보장할 수 있는 매뉴얼도 없다/ But in this case, even the most basic precautions in rescue efforts are being thrown to the wind./ 그러나 이번의 경우에는 구조노력과 관련한 가장 기본적인 예방조치조차도 잊어버렸다/ If such a dangerous situation continues, we cannot rule out the possibility of another type of tragedy unfolding before our eyes./만약 이러한 위험한 상황이 지속된다면 우리는 또 다른 비극의 우리 눈앞에서 벌어질 가능성을 배제할 수 없다/
Of course, it is urgent to search for and salvage the remains of the victims trapped in the ship./ 물론 여객선 안에 갇혀있는 남아 있는 희생자를 수색하고 구하는 것이 긴급한 일이다/ But the health of the divers who are risking their lives is also precious./ 그러나 생명을 무릅쓰는 잠수사들의 건강도 또한 소중하다/ Not only the government, but all of us must learn a lesson from the regrettable death of this single diver./ 정부뿐만 아니라 우리 모두 이번 한 사람의 잠수사의 애석한 죽음에서 교훈을 배워야 할 것이다/ We must do some serious soul searching if we ever take the perilous mission of divers for granted./ 우리는 잠수사의 위험한 임무수행을 당연하게 받아들였다면 심각하게 자기반성을 해야 할 것이다/ We must ask ourselves if we are the ones demanding such devotion - at a cost of their own lives./ 만약 우리가 잠수사들의 생명을 대가로 그러한 헌신을 요구한다면 우리 자신에게 반문해봐야 한다/ The government plans to exert all possible efforts to search for the victims until Saturday./ 정부는 토요일까지 희생자들을 위한 수색에 모든 가능한 노력을 다할 것이라고 한다/ No matter how important the mission, however, it must refrain from pushing efforts at the risk of divers’ lives./ 그러나 아무리 그 임무가 중요하다고 하더라도 잠수사들의 생명을 위험하게 하는 일은 강요하지 말아야 할 것이다/ We hope no more lives are taken by this tragedy./ 우리는 더 이상의 생명을 이번 비극으로 잃지 않기를 바란다/
