Dongkuk Steel sees Korean market in threaded steel bars

Dongkuk Steel, a major steelmaker in Korea, said yesterday it has developed five types of threaded steel rods.

Although the threaded steel rod market in Korea is small, the company said that demand would increase as earthquake-resistant designs are becoming popular.

Unlike regular steel bars that need welding or compression to connect with each other, threaded steel rods bars are connected by using coupler devices, saving time and costs. The company said that the product is widely used in the foundations of high buildings.

Dongkuk said Japan’s threaded steel rod market was 500,000 tons a year. The company expects Korea’s to grow to 100,000 tons per year.
