Kia Motors on track to sell its 30-millionth vehicle this month

Kia Motors, Korea’s No. 2 automaker, said yesterday that its global sales will surpass the 30 million mark this month, 52 years after it rolled out its first vehicle.

As of end of April, the automaker had sold 29.9 million vehicles, but since its average monthly sales are 260,000 vehicles, Kia said it is certain that it will top the 30 million mark.

The company first produced a three-wheel light truck, the K-360, in 1962 at its Sohari plant in Gyeonggi. It surpassed sales of 10 million units in 2003 and reached 20 million in 2010.

Kia said that its growth took off after it joined with Hyundai Motor Group in 2000. The company said that its subcompact Pride, which was introduced in 1987, was its best-selling model, with 3.46 million units sold.
