Korean film ‘Obsessed’ engrosses local audiences

Korea’s latest romance film “Obsessed,” starring Song Seung-heon and Lim Ji-yeon, debuted strong at No. 1 in the box office last weekend, according to the Korean Film Council yesterday.

Directed by Kim Dae-woo, “Obsessed” has been the center of attention since it released racy teaser images of Prince Charming Song and newbie actress Lim. The depiction of a perilous love affair between a colonel and the wife of his subordinate drew 445,490 admissions at the local box office, making 3.7 billion won ($3.6 million).

Lagging behind by a thin margin, monster blockbuster “Godzilla,” which also debuted last week, garnered 438,487 admissions over the weekend.

In third was Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman’s sci-fi film “Transcendence,” which attracted 317,046 admissions to earn 2.6 billion won in its first week.

Korean movie “The Target,” starring Ryu Seung-ryong and Lee Jin-wook, stepped down to fourth place from last week’s No. 2 slot with 284,807 ticket sales.

And dethroned from its two-week No. 1 spot, Hyun Bin’s costume drama “The Fatal Encounter” was in fifth place with 211,975 admissions, bringing its three-week total to more than 3.6 million.
