Renault Samsung to start exporting kits to Malaysia

Renault Samsung Motors said yesterday it started exporting semi-knock-down (SKD) kits of its SM3 compact sedan to Malaysia in a bid to expand its presence in Southeast Asia.

The Korean unit of French automaker Renault said that Malaysia’s Tan Chong Motors Holdings will be responsible for the sales. The initial volume for this year is 1,000 units, but RSM said the amount will expand in the future. RSM said that as an export hub in Asia, it will play a leading role in Renault Group’s plans for the continent. Renault Group is working to set up 25 dealers in Malaysia by 2016. Last year, the country’s auto market grew by more than 5 percent year-on-year to 645,000 units.
