LG 3rd for revenue in mobile market

LG Electronics has taken the spot as the No. 3 mobile phone maker in the world in terms of revenue, according to Strategy Analytics.

LG sold $3.1 billion worth of mobile phones in the first quarter, trailing Apple’s $26 billion and Samsung Electronics’ $23.1 billion, the latest quarterly report from the market research agency showed. Sony came in fourth at $2.518 billion while Nokia fifth at $2.515 billion.

Last year, LG ranked fourth in terms of total revenue at $11.8 billion, behind Nokia’s $14 billion. Last quarter was the first time LG was as high as No. 3 in the global mobile market in terms of sales since a smartphone was introduced.

Another Strategy Analytics report released in March showed that LG was the No. 3 smartphone maker in the world for 2013 with revenue of $11.1 billion, after Apple ($92.8 billion) and Samsung ($92.3 billion).

Converting first-quarter revenue to market share, Apple accounted for 34.2 percent of the global mobile phone market, Samsung took 30.4 percent and LG was at 4.2 percent.

In terms of the number of phones sold, Samsung was the No. 1 mobile vendor in the first quarter, selling 113 million handsets, followed by Nokia’s 47 million and Apple’s 43.7 million. LG was fourth at 16.4 million.
