휴대전화, 최후의 기록자
최근 히말라야 힘룽히말(7126m) 등반 중 크레바스에 빠졌다 자력으로 살아나온 남성이 화제다. 미국 켄터키대 지리학과 존 올 교수. 깊이 22m의 크레바스에 추락했으나 1m 남짓한 얼음 턱에 걸려 목숨을 건졌다. 갈비뼈 5개가 부러지고 어깨 탈골에, 오른팔은 금이 갔다. 그러나 불굴의 의지로 얼음도끼 하나에 기대어 크레바스를 기어 올라왔다.더욱 흥미로운 것은 그가 6시간에 달하는 탈출 과정을 휴대전화 동영상으로 찍었다는 점이다. 유튜브와페이스북을 통해 공개된 이 영상에는 피투성이 얼굴로 사투를 벌이는 장면이 담겨 있다. “아악, 오른팔이 말을 안 듣는다.” “너무 고통스럽지만 빠져나갈 거다.” 저 높은 곳 크레바스 입구와 아찔한 아래쪽도 보여준다.
가까스로 크레바스를빠져나온 그는 위성 장비가 있는 텐트로 이동해 구조요청도 페이스북을 통해 했다. 위성 메신저를 이용해 ‘미국 등반가 과학 프로그램’ 페이스북 페이지에 “구조대를 불러달라”는 글을 올렸다. 부상 상태와 위치도 알렸다. 휴대전화와 SNS가 혹 최후일지 모르는 상황을 기록하며, 생명줄 같은 존재가 된 것이다.
안타깝게 죽어간 세월호 아이들도 마지막 순간 카톡과 SNS를 했다. 동영상으로 선실 내부를 찍고 “구조 좀”이라고 외쳤다. 그리고 결국은 “엄마 아빠 미안해, 사랑해”라는 마지막 말을 남겼다. 아이들뿐이 아니다. 한 중년의 생존 남성은 JTBC ‘뉴스9’과의 인터뷰에서 “(잘 모르는 사람들까지 찍은 것은) 어찌 될지 모르니 모두의 모습을 남겨놓고 싶어서”라며 울먹였다.
극한 상황에서 휴대전화를 꺼내드는 인간. 나의 일부가 된 휴대전화로 최후의 진실을 기록하려는 인간. 온 삶을 휴대전화와 함께하는 ‘호모 모빌리쿠스’의 단면이다(최근 미국에서는 자녀가 태어나자마자 아이의 SNS 계정을 만들어주는 부모들도 등장했다). 또 사람들의 말처럼 당시 우리 아이들의 카톡에 누구라도 “가만히 있지 말고 밖으로 나오라” 한마디만 했더라면 하는 안타까움은 영원히 떨칠 수 없다.
한 자녀교육 강사가 “카톡을 하는 대신 살려는 노력을 했어야 한다”는 발언을 했다가 망언 목록에 올랐다. 본인은 안타까운 마음에 한 말이라지만 뭘 몰라도 너무 모르는 얘기다. 끝까지 아이들이 놓지 않았던 휴대전화는 유일하게 세상과 연결된 통로였다는 것, 마지막을 증명하기 위한 몸부림이었다는 것. 또 무참히 스러져가며 세상을 향해 던진 메시지였다는 것 말이다.
