Park’s supine diplomacy

Since the ferry disaster, Korea’s diplomacy nearly shuddered to a halt./ 세월호 참사 이후 한국외교는 거의 기진맥진하여 중지되어 있다/ Diplomatic efforts to curb North Korea’s ever-expanding nuclear ambitions have stopped./ 점점 핵 야욕을 드러내고 있는 북한을 억제할 외교적 노력은 중단되었다/ It is not too much to say that our government is only passively waiting for a fourth nuclear test and another long-range missile test by the North./ 우리 정부는 북한이 4차 핵실험을 하도록 기다리고 다른 장거리 미사일을 발사하도록 소극적으로 기다리고 있을 뿐이라고 말해도 지나친 말이 아니다/ The government is not making any efforts to avert another provocation or resume the stalled nuclear talks./ 현 정부는 또 다른 도발을 억지할 노력도, 중단된 핵 회담을 재개할 노력도 기울이지 않고 있다/ By merely reiterating, “The ball is now in the North’s court,” the government is passively praying that the North changes its course./ 단지 “이제 공은 북한으로 넘어 가 있다”라는 말만 되풀이 하며 정부는 북한이 태도를 바꾸기를 소극적으로 바라고 있을 뿐이다/ Inter-Korean relations are no exception./ 남북한 관계도 마찬가지다/ Despite Pyongyang’s denigration of President Park’s “Reunification as a jackpot” comment and her Dresden Declaration as an attempt to one day absorb the regime, the government does not do anything./ 박 대통령의 “통일대박론”과 드레스덴 구상을 흡수통일을 하려 한다는 것으로 북한이 폄하하고 있음에도 불구하고 우리 정부는 아무 것도 하지 않고 있다/
The government has also given up on its diplomacy over the tricky issues of the comfort women and Japan’s bad attitude toward its past misdeeds./ 우리 정부는 또한 다루기 힘든 문제인 위안부 문제와 과거 만행에 대한 일본의 잘못된 태도에 대한 외교조차 포기하고 있다/ In the meantime, Tokyo accelerates cooperation with Pyongyang to settle its abductees issue./ 그 동안 일본 정부는 납북자 문제를 해결하기 위해 북한과 협상을 추진하고 있다/ Japan’s determination to continue dialogue with North Korea portends a perilous schism in the united front among Seoul, Washington and Tokyo./ 북한과 대화를 계속하겠다는 일본의 결정은 한미일 공조를 심각하게 무너뜨릴 수도 있다/ Regardless of repeated remarks from Washington hinting at the possibility of South Korea joining a U.S.-led missile defense system, the government’s official position is still indecipherable./ 한국이 미국 주도의 미사일 방어망에 합류할 가능성이 있다고 암시하는 미국의 반복된 말에도 불구하고 우리 정부는 여전이 불투명한 입장을 취하고 있다/
The president’s security and diplomacy team is not established yet, as seen in the alarming vacancy at the top of the National Intelligence Service./ 국정원장의 공석으로 인한 불안에서 알 수 있듯이 대통령 안보외교팀은 아직 구성도 하지 못했다/ It is futile to expect creative and flexible diplomacy under such circumstances./ 이러한 상황에서 창의적이고 유연한 외교를 기대할 수는 없다/ It is not only the economy that must get back to business./ 정상으로 돌아가야 하는 것이 경제만이 아니다/ We urge the president to focus on diplomacy./ 우리는 외교에 대통령이 비상한 관심을 가져주기를 촉구한다/
