Daewoo shipbuilding using robot to install cables

Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, one of the nation’s top three shipbuilders, said that it developed a robot that can install cables in vessels and at offshore plants. The company said that it registered 40 patents and is considering selling the robot.

About 200 kilometers (124 miles) of cables go into a ship and 800 kilometers are used in offshore plants, according to DSME.

Previously, the company used a winch to install cables and in curved areas it was done by employees, but it took longer to do the job.

DSME expected that the robot will be able to save the company 4.7 billion won ($4.5 million) this year and 15 billion won in 2017.
