Hanjin wins order to construct 2 natural gas ‘bunkering’ ships

Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction said yesterday that it won an order to build two natural gas “bunkering” carriers for the price of $100 million.

The company said it won the order from Japanese shipping company NYK, which wanted Hanjin to build the world’s first vessel used to fuel ships powered by LNG.

Hanjin said that the vessel will have two LNG tanks and can store 5,000 cubic meters of LNG to enable ship-to-ship transfer of fuel on the sea. Currently, LNG-fueled vessels need to refuel near a dock that has LNG tanks. Hanjin is expected to deliver the ship to NYK by 2015.
