Park’s communication problems
President Park Geun-hye yesterday explained to her senior secretaries why she decided to let Prime Minister Chung Hong-won remain in office despite an earlier pledge to dismiss him./ 박근혜 대통령은 어제 수석비서관회의에서 해고하기로 한 이전의 약속에도 불구하고 정홍원 총리를 유임시키기로 한 결정에 대해 설명했다/ She also announced ways to overhaul current systems for appointing high-profile officials while calling for an improvement in the current confirmation hearings at the National Assembly./ 또한 박 대통령은 현재의 고위 공직자 임명 제도의 점검을 발표하는 동시에 현재 국회 인사 청문제도의 개선을 요구했다/ But given the repercussions from her nomination of Moon Chang-keuk as prime minister and her continuously botched appointments, her explanations lack style and content./ 그러나 문창극 총리 지명으로 인한 영향과 연이어 실패한 지명의 영향을 감안하면 대통령의 설명은 형식과 내용면에서 부족하다/President Park prefers to use senior secretaries’ meetings as forums to explain her decisions, which is not effective./ 박 대통령은 수석비서관 회의를 자신의 결정을 설명하는 토론의 장으로 활용하기를 좋아하는데 그것은 효과적인 방법이 아니다/ A meeting with her senior aides is an internal meeting rather than a public communication tool./ 수석 비서관들과의 회의는 공공 소통의 도구라기보다는 오히려 내부적인 회의에 가깝다/ As Moon’s withdrawal and Chung’s staying in office are top priorities and as the people want to know why she has made such decisions, Park must talk directly to the people instead of expressing ideas to her staff./ 문창극 지명 철회와 정홍원 유임은 중요한 사안이므로 국민이 왜 대통령이 그렇게 결정을 내렸는지 알고 싶어 하므로 비서관들에게 생각을 설명할 것이 아니라 국민들에게 직접 얘기를 하는 것이 맞다/

Park’s remarks at the internal meeting are also confusing./ 내부 회의에서 하는 박 대통령의 발언 또한 혼란스럽다/ She said her aides must find “impeccable candidates” while at the same time stating that the media and the opposition camp have repeatedly attacked her nominees based on public opinion./ 박 대통령은 보좌관들에게 “완전무결한 후보자”를 찾아야 할 것이라고 말하면서 한편으로 언론과 야당이 여론 몰이 식으로 지명자를 계속 공격하고 있다고 언급하고 있는 것이다/ What is she trying to say?/ 박 대통령이 말하고자 하는 것이 무얼까? Citizens are eager to know why she did nothing to confront the public’s judgment and if she really believes the once-vegetative prime minister has the energy to kick off a national revamp as promised./ 국민들은 왜 박 대통령이 여론 재판에 맞서서 아무 것도 하지 않았는지 알고 싶어 하며 박 대통령이 정말로 유임된 총리가 약속대로 국가 개조에 착수할 에너지를 가지고 있다고 정말로 믿고 있는지를 알고 싶어 한다/

The president said she will create a pool of talent to prepare for contingencies./ 대통령은 만일의 사태를 대비하기 위해 인력풀을 만들겠다고 말했다/ But how many will accept the Blue House’s background checks when their new positions are not fixed?/ 하지만 새로운 자리가 정해지지도 않았는데 청와대의 배경 확인을 얼마나 많은 사람들이 받아들일까?/ The president must guarantee the independence of the new presidential secretary for personnel affairs, and if a candidate is determined, she must seek help from opponents./ 대통령은 새로운 인사수석실의 독립을 보장해야 하고 만약 후보자가 결정되면 야당의 도움을 요청해야 할 것이다/ If not, she cannot expect their support. /그렇게 하지 않는다면 야당의 지원을 기대할 수 없을 것이다/
