KCC to decide subsidy ceiling for telecoms every 6 months

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) said yesterday it has decided to allow more flexibility in its smartphone subsidy policies.

From now on, the KCC will announce a subsidy ceiling every six months, which will be between 250,000 won and 350,000 won ($247 to $346). At its regular meeting, the commission increased the subsidy ceiling for the first time in four years.

The commission can now change the ceiling if the mobile device manufacturers set the price too high. Also, the three telecom giants must now ensure that their affiliated and independent retailers list the price of each device and subsidies in public.
