LG U+ will discount customers who return old mobile phones

LG U+, Korea’s third-largest mobile carrier, said yesterday that it will compensate customers for used phones when they purchase new ones as long as the old phone was used for at least a year.

Previously, people who subscribed to a multi-year plan at one of the three mobile carriers were compensated for a phone if they had used it for least for 15 months or paid at least 700,000 won ($691.6) worth of smartphone bills over a one-year period.

For example, if a person returns the Galaxy Note 2 to LG U+ after using it for a year and then buys the LG G3 phone costing 899,800 won, he or she can purchase the new smartphone at 499,800 won, with a 270,000 won discount and 130,000 won compensation for bringing back the older phone. Customers who return a phone will also be given a 50,000-won gift certificate to purchase goods through an online shopping mall run by LG Household and Health Care.

The compensation will be determined according to the market price of the second-hand phones, the company said. Only those people who paid more than 50,000 won per month for the most recent three months of their contract will be eligible for the new compensation, it said.
