Stop the missiles
North Korea’s show of force is getting ever bolder./ 북한의 무력시위가 점점 대담해지고 있다/ It has been ratcheting up the level of threats by firing ballistic missiles and multiple rocket launchers around the tense Demilitarized Zone./ 긴장된 비무장 지대 주변에서 탄도미사일과 다연장 로켓포를 발사함으로써 위협의 수위를 올리고 있다/ On Monday, it fired more than 100 rounds of shells from multiple rocket launchers and artilleries near the military demarcation line (MDL) on the east coast in Goseong, Gangwon, to the north of the East Sea./ 월요일 동해 북방 강원도 고성 동해안의 군사분계선 근처 포병대와 다연장 로켓포에서 100여발의 포탄을 발사했다/ That follows its firing of two Scud missiles from Kaesong - approximately 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) away from the MDL on the western front - off to the East Sea./ 그것은 서부전선 군사분계선에서 대략 20킬로미터 떨어진 개성에서 스커드 미사일 2기를 동해로 발사한 데 이어서 일어난 일이다/Yesterday’s test-firing of missiles and multiple rocket launchers towards the East Sea took place in its southernmost area./ 어제의 동해안을 향한 미사일과 다연장 로켓포의 시험 발사는 군사분계선 가장 남쪽 지역에서 일어난 것이다/ Monday’s missiles and shells, which had a shooting range of 3 to 50 kilometers, fell on 1 to 10 kilometers above the Northern Limit Line on the East Sea./ 월요일의 미사일과 포탄은 사거리가 3-50킬로미터로 동해 북방한계선 위쪽 1-10킬로미터 지점에 떨어졌다/ As the test-firing occurred in broad daylight, several columns of water were witnessed on the sea./ 시험발사가 백주 대낮에 일어나 해상에서 물기둥이 목격되기도 했다/
Many factors are involved with the North’s firing drills./ 많은 요인들이 북한의 발사 훈련과 관련이 되어 있다/ First of all, the exercises are most likely aimed at countering the Eulji Freedom Guardian drill between South Korean military and the United States forces, scheduled for mid August./ 우선, 그 훈련이 8월 중순으로 예정되어 있는 한미 을지 프리덤 가디언 훈련에 대응하는 목적일 가능성이 높다/ Since January, North Korea has consistently demanded the joint drills be stopped./ 1월부터 북한은 지속적으로 연합훈련을 중지할 것을 요구했다/ On February 21, it fired multiple rocket launchers for the first time this year in protest of another joint military drill between South Korea and America despite the ongoing reunions of separated families./ 2월 21일에는 이산가족이 상봉 중인데도 불구하고 다른 한미 군사훈련에 저항하기 위해 올해 처음으로 다연장 로켓포를 발사하기도 했다/ At the moment, USS George Washington, a U.S. Navy nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, is anchored at Busan Harbor to join in the Eulji Freedom Guardian drill./ 지금 미국 해군의 핵 항공모함인 조지 워싱턴호가 을지 프리덤 가디언 훈련에 참가하기 위해 부산항에 닻을 내리고 있다/ Our military authorities must take into account the possibility that the North’s show of force continues for a while./ 우리 군 당국은 북한의 무력시위가 당분간 지속될 가능성이 있음을 감안해야 할 것이다/
Other military experts have came up with the analysis that North Korea is raising tension to pressure South Korea to accept its proposals, including the cessation of mutual slanders./ 다른 군사 전문가는 북한이 상호 비방 중지를 포함한 북한의 제안을 남한이 받아들이도록 하기 위해서 압력을 가하려고 긴장을 고조시키고 있다고 분석하고 있다/ But it is a great mistake if the North believes it can achieve the goal by resorting to such an tense show of force./ 하지만 북한이 긴장된 무력시위에 의존하여 목적을 달성할 수 있다고 믿는다면 오산이다/ The North must understand that only when it stops its brazen military threats can its relations with the South improve as its leader Kim Jong-un allegedly hopes./ 북한은 뻔뻔한 군사 위협을 중지해야만 북한 지도자 김정은이 그토록 바라는 남한과의 관계를 개선할 수 있다는 사실을 알아야 한다/
Our military should be fully prepared to deal with the possibility that the show of force leads to a direct provocation against us anytime soon./ 우리 군은 무력시위가 곧 우리에 대한 직접적인 도발로 이어질 수 있다는 가능성에 대처할 만반의 준비를 해야 할 것이다/ North Korea has already fired short- and-medium range missiles, multiple rocket launchers and other artilleries from its east coast across its territory into the East Sea./ 북한은 이미 북한 전역 동해안에 있는 중 단거리 미사일, 다연장 로켓포와 다른 포를 발사한 바 있다/ In some cases, Kim Jong-un himself visited the firing spot./ 어떤 경우에는 김정은이 직접 발사현장을 방문하기도 했다/ It is high time for our military to thoroughly prepare for further provocations./ 우리 군이 앞으로의 도발에 철저하게 대비해야 시점이다/
