Prosecutors in Daegu ask for additional jail time for parentsDaegu prosecutors yesterday asked a local court to sentence a 36-year-old stepmother surnamed Lim to seven years in prison for abusing her two stepdaughters.
After being brutally beaten, the woman’s eight-year-old stepdaughter died of internal bleeding last August in Chilgok County, North Gyeongsang.
The horrendous case sparked public outrage against the stepmother as well as the children’s 38-year old biological father, who overlooked the chronic abuse.
Prosecutors asked the court to sentence the husband, surnamed Kim, to seven years in prison on the same charge.
A trial held yesterday was an additional trial for the couple after the prosecutors filed additional charges against them besides child abuse. The prosecutors refused yesterday to reveal what the additional charges were.
Lim and Kim were sentenced to 10 years and three years in prison in a court ruling in April. The ruling drew public criticism that it was too light considering the nature of their crimes.
