SM brings a touch of velvet to K-pop

SM Entertainment, home to many popular K-pop groups such as Girls’ Generation, Super Junior and Exo, is introducing a new girl group named Red Velvet.

Red Velvet will have four members: Seul-ki, Irene, Wendy and Joy.

The first three were part of a team of trainees named SM Rookies, which includes males and females who frequently practice in front of fans to get ready for official future debuts.

The new group will release its first EP on Aug. 4 with the debut song “Happiness.”

The teaser video for the group’s debut was released through SM Entertainment’s official website and on YouTube.

This marks the first time in five years that a top entertainment agency introduced a new group.

“Just like how red velvet reminds people of a soft, feminine touch, along with some passionate feelings from the color red, we have high hopes that the group will mesmerize the world with some sophisticated music and performances,” said the agency.
