Hite-Jinro, one of the leading beer and soju producers in Korea, was raided by police after it was accused of spreading a rumor about its competitor Oriental Brewery’s Cass beer.
The Seoul Suseo Police Station sent police to Hite-Jinro’s offices in Seocho-dong, southern Seoul, and its headquarters in Daejeon, South Chungcheong, and seized computers for investigation.
Oriental Brewery requested a police probe after comments surfaced on Twitter and Facebook suggested that washing detergent is included in Cass and that the beer smells and tastes like sanitizer.
Hite-Jinro found evidence that the rumors had been spread through a specific Internet Protocol. The company handed the information over to the police and accused Hite-Jinro of being the culprit.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said last Tuesday that the oxidation of malt and dissolved oxygen resulted in a smell of detergent, according to its examination of Oriental Brewery’s beer.
