LG Display’s circular plastic OLED is tailored to wearable devices. Provided by the company

LG Display, the world’s second-largest flat panel maker, said yesterday it is mass-producing circular plastic OLED displays that can be used in wearable devices.

The circle OLED is a 1.3-inch diameter (3.3-centimeter) plastic substrate display and is only 0.6 millimeters thick with a 320 x 320 resolution. It can change the design of wearable devices, LG Display said.

Because the circular display is 57 percent larger than a square display of the same height, LG said it will be more convenient for consumers.

The new OLED has functions that are optimal for wearable devices like watches, such as a 100 percent color gamut, 300 nit luminance and an infinite contrast ratio.

LG Display also developed a Power Save Mode for the screen, which allows for a high-quality display without draining the power supply.

The screen will run on low power at all times so it will likely be used in wearable devices such as smartwatches.

To produce the circular plastic OLED, LG Display developed high-precision laser-cutting technology that is unique to the company.

“Using plastic OLED, we will respond to the fast growth in wearable devices and satisfy the varied demands and requests of customers,” said Yeo Sang-deok, chief technology officer and executive vice president at LG Display.

“We will continue to ensure reliable production capacity and development of innovative technology.”
