Billions of won in Lotto money has gone unclaimed since 2009

From 2009 to August last year, 17 first-place Lotto winners haven’t claimed their prize money, which amounts to about 32.7 billion won ($31.5 million), or about 1.92 billion won per person. But it’s too late for the winners, as the prize money expires after one year.

The entire unclaimed amount for the lottery during the same period is about 207.9 billion won. According to the report by the Korea Lottery Commission, 130.2 billion won, or 62.7 percent of the unclaimed money, is an accumulation of 5,000 won winners.

When lottery prize money goes unclaimed, it becomes a part of the Lottery Fund, which is used for social welfare programs.
