CJ CheilJedang, the food and bioengineering unit of the CJ Group, announced yesterday it will enter the bioplastic business in cooperation with Lotte Chemical and the city of Daegu for the next five years.
Bioplastics are made partly or wholly from sustainable plant sources. They are often biodegradable and have wide applications to either produce valuable chemicals or destroy polluting chemicals with little impact on the environment.
The project will develop polylactic acid. Having similar properties to conventional petrochemical-based plastics, polylactic acid is a transparent plastic derived from corn.
