Gyeonggi student wins half-pipe gold

Korean snowboard prospect Kweon Lee-jun won the gold medal in the half-pipe Sunday at the International Ski Federation’s Junior World Championships in Yabuli, China, the first Korean to medal in the event.

In the final, the 17-year-old from Pangok High School in Namyangju, Gyeonggi, had 92 points to beat Americans Toby Miller (86) and Chase Blackwell (84).

Before Kweon, Korea’s best finish at the Junior Worlds was fifth by Kim Ho-jun in 2008.

Fellow Korean Lee Min-sik finished ninth with 66.75 points.
