KTX poised to inaugurate express trains to Pohang

The Korean express train KTX will launch an extended route from Singyeongju Station to Pohang, North Gyeongsang, the government announced Monday.

The extended route enables visitors to travel from Seoul to Pohang in two hours and 15 minutes. So far, the fastest train available from Seoul to Pohang was the Saemaeul line, which took five hours and 20 minutes.

Starting test operations today, the full Seoul-Pohang route will officially launch on Thursday, operating at 16 times on weekdays, 18 on Fridays and 20 on weekends. Two time slots will be dedicated for the Incheon International Airport-Pohang route.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport completed extending the 38.7-kilometer (24-mile) railway after five years of construction at a cost of 1.2 trillion won ($1.1 billion).

The government said the additional route to Pohang, the steelmaking center on Korea’s east coast, contributes to boosting the economy of coastal regions.
