Comedian Jang sued for defamation

Comedian Jang Dong-min is being sued for defamation after making comments about the survivors of the Sampoong Department Store disaster during the radio program “Onggura” last year.

The department store collapsed due to structural failure in June 1995, killing or injuring around 1,400 people.

Seoul Dongbu District Public Prosecutor’s Office revealed that one of the survivors from the disastrous incident brought charges against the 35-year-old comedian and that the investigation is proceeding.

“There is a club where people drink urine,” said Jang during the radio program. “When Sampoong Department Store building collapsed, the female survivor who was rescued after 21 days since the incident could survive because she drank urine and she is the one who made the club,”

The charge against Jang went viral after KBS 2TV’s “Morning Newstime” reported the lawsuit on Monday.

This isn’t Jang’s first time in hot water: Another offensive comment directed at women - also on “Onggura” - went viral few weeks ago. Jang was forced to step down from the “Six Men Project,” a reality show to determine the new member of “Infinite Challenge.”

Due to the controversy, he will be leaving radio program “Jang Dong-min, Lady Jane’s 2 O’Clock Radio.”
