Schools choose to close as MERS keeps spreading

중동에서 전파된 치사율이 높은 호흡기 질환 전염에 대한 극심한 공포가 일부 지역으로 퍼지면서 전국적으로 500개가 넘는 학교들이 잠정 휴교를 결정했다.
With five new patients testing positive for Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) on Wednesday, the total number of MERS cases in Korea rose to 30. That includes two patients who died Monday.

수요일에 메르스 양성 확진 환자 5명이 추가로 발생해 한국에서 메르스 감염환자는 30명으로 늘어났다. 추가 감염자 5명에는 월요일에 사망한 환자 두 명이 포함된다.
“Schools are where students come together and where their safety must come first,” said Education Minister Hwang Woo-yea on Wednesday. Hwang said principals or heads of education facilities may shut down their schools after talking to local education offices.

황우여 교육부 장관은 수요일 “학교는 학생들이 모이는 곳이어서 학생들의 안전을 최우선으로 생각해야 한다”고 말했다. 황 장관은 교장이나 교육시설의 장이 해당 지역 교육청에 얘기한 뒤 휴업해도 된다고 말했다.
As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, a total of 544 schools, including 196 kindergartens, 273 elementary schools, 55 middle schools, seven high schools, nine special schools and four universities, decided to cancel classes or close completely, and the number is increasing as more and more schools are considering closing.Make-up classes will be held during vacations for the cancelled classes, said the minister.

수요일 오후 5시 현재 유치원 196개, 초등학교 273개, 중학교 55개, 고등학교 7개, 특수학교 9개, 대학교 4개 등 총 544개 학교가 휴업 또는 휴교를 결정했다. 더 많은 학교들이 휴교를 검토하고 있어 숫자는 더 늘어날 것이다. 황 장관은 방학기간 동안 보충수업을 실시할 것이라고 말했다.

서울국제학교, 한국국제학교, 경기수원국제학교 등 서울과 경기도 소재 일부 국제학교들은 메르스 때문에 예년보다 몇일 일찍 이번 주에 봄학기를 마친다.
