‘Gravity’ writer drops lawsuit

LOS ANGELES - Author Tess Gerritsen has dropped her lawsuit against Warner Bros. over similarities between the 2013 film “Gravity’’ and her 1999 book, she wrote in a statement Monday, citing brutal emotional and financial costs.

Both the film and the novel focus on a female astronaut stranded in space and trying to get home.

Gerritsen received $1 million to write a script off her book from production companies which were later absorbed by Warner Bros. Gerritsen’s attorneys say that Warner Bros. should honor the contract, which would give her screen rights and a share of the profits.

U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Morrow dismissed the case earlier this month citing flaws and the need for amendments, the second time the lawsuit required amendments since it was filed in April 2014. AP
