Did you know ‘God is black’?
God often appears in movies when the role of a god is necessary to the plot. But not many actors dare to play the divine role. So in many movies, God appears only as a voice.A survey was taken on which actors play the voice of God in movies. Many of them are African-American actors and Morgan Freeman has played the part multiple times. In the Book of Genesis, “God created man in his own image,” so an American media outlet claimed, “God must have been black.”
In fact, Jesus must have been dark-skinned, as the Semitic people were characterized to have dark hair, brown eyes and an olive complexion. However, in many medieval Christian art works, Jesus is depicted as a Caucasian man with blond hair and blue eyes. It is a trick of sensitive racism. Last month, a white supremacist went into a church and fired at the congregation, killing nine people. Even when the president is an African-American, racism still exists in the United States.
But racism is not just a foreign problem. Three years ago, Swedish scholars surveyed racial discrimination in 85 countries, and India, Jordan, Bangladesh and Hong Kong were ranked as the worst. Korea was just above them. But Korea was the only country with severe racism among those with a high level of education and stable economy. Sam Okyere, a television personality from Ghana appearing on the talk show “Abnormal Summit,” said that his black friends were afraid to come to Korea.
But race relations are improving. Recently, Misty Copeland became the first black principal dancer at the prestigious American Ballet Theater. In a ballet scene dominated by white dancers, her promotion is almost as significant as Barack Obama’s election victory. Her performance in “Swan Lake” would be a black swan at a different level.
In 16th century England, certain theories were compared to a black swan. Since people believed that all swans were white and the existence of a black swan would have been an absurd claim. But in the late 17th century, Dutch explorers couldn’t believe their eyes when they landed on the west coast of Australia and spotted black swans.
Now, the “black swan” concept is widespread. Seemingly impossible things can always become reality. As the black swan fallacy illustrates, racism and discrimination could rapidly disappear from Korea.

하느님은 영화에도 종종 강림하신다. 스토리상 출연이 불가피한 때가 적잖다. 문제는 너무 거룩한 존재여서 배우들이 연기할 엄두를 못 냈다. 고육지책으로 나온 게 음성 처리. 그리하여 수많은 영화에서 하느님은 목소리로만 발현하셨다. 영화 속 하느님 목소리를 누가 맡는지 조사한 적이 있다. 그랬더니 다수가 흑인. ‘쇼생크 탈출’에 나온 모건 프리먼에겐 하느님 음성 전문이란 별명까지 붙었다. 일반인에겐 흑인 음성이 조물주의 목소리로 들렸던 거다. 창세기엔 “하느님이 자신의 형상대로 사람을 만드셨다”고 돼 있다. 이에 재치 있는 한 미국 언론이 갈파했다. ‘하느님은 흑인이다’. 예수도 짙은 피부였을 게다. 검은 머리에 갈색 눈, 올리브색 피부가 예수가 속한 유대인(셈족)의 특징이다. 그런데도 많은 중세 성화에선 금발에 푸른 눈의 백인으로 그려졌다. 피부색에 민감한 인종주의의 장난이다. 지난달 말 한 백인우월주의자가 흑인 교회에 난입, 9명을 사살했다. 아무리 세월이 가도 흑인 대통령을 배출한 미국에서조차 인종차별은 여전하단 증거다. 남 흉볼 게 아니다. 3년 전 스웨덴 학자들이 85개국의 인종차별 실태를 조사했다. 그랬더니 인도·요르단·방글라데시·홍콩이 최악이었고 한국 등 6개국이 그 다음이었다. 더 아픈 건 “잘살고 교육 수준이 높은데도 차별이 심한 나라는 한국이 유일하다”는 지적이었다. 오죽하면 TV 프로 ‘비정상회담’의 가나 출신 스타 샘 오취리마저 “흑인 친구들이 자신들에 대한 이미지 때문에 한국에 오길 겁낸다”고 했겠나. 하지만 너무 자학할 건 아니다. 며칠 전 인종 문제로 시끄러운 판에 미 최고의 아메리칸발레시어터에서 첫 흑인 수석 발레리나가 탄생했다. 백인 세상인 발레계에서 흑인이 수석 무용수로 발탁됐다는 건 버락 오바마 당선 못잖게 뜻깊은 일이다. 그가 ‘백조의 호수’ 주연으로 춤추면 또 다른 차원에서 ‘검은 백조’가 탄생하는 셈이다. 16세기 영국에선 특정 이론을 검은 백조로 빗대며 타박하는 일이 흔했다. 희지 않은 백조란 없다고 믿어졌기에 터무니없는 소리를 의미했다. 하지만 17세기 말 호주 서부에 첫발을 디딘 네덜란드인들은 눈을 의심했다. 살아 있는 검은 백조가 유유히 헤엄치고 있는 게 아닌가. 이후 ‘검은 백조 현상’이란 개념이 세상을 풍미한다. 불가능하게 보이는 일도 얼마든지 현실이 될 수 있단 뜻이다. 검은 백조 해프닝에서 보듯 한국인의 인종차별 악습이 급속히 사라지지 말란 법도 없다. 남정호 논설위원
