Hyundai Heavy Industries working on new LNG carrier

Hyundai Heavy Industries said Tuesday that it has developed an environmentally friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier using a gas turbine engine in cooperation with General Electric (GE). According to the company Lloyd’s Register has conditionally approved the application for the new LNG carrier.
The new carrier will significantly reduce operating expenses and improve shipping performance using a combined gas turbine, electric and stream system (Coges).
The new technology is expected to save 20 billion won, with no additional ventilation gas disposal system needed. The new engine will weigh 60 percent of the former, the company said, improving shipping performance and reducing maintenance expenditures.
