Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has sparked
outrage among the Japanese public over the
nationalist Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP)
railroading of a controversial package of new
security bills on Thursday./ 목요일 국수주의를 자
처하는 일본 자민당이 새로운 안보법안을 강행처리하
면서 아베 신조 일본 총리는 일본 국민의 분노를 쌌다/
Last weekend’s violent demonstrations across Japan,
including Tokyo, saw many placards that read, “We
will not forgive Abe’s politics.”/ 지난 주말 도쿄를 비

치를 용서하지 않겠다”는 구호가 물결쳤다/ After bills
allowing Japan to exercise a right to “collective selfdefense”
passed in the Lower House, the approval rating
of the Abe cabinet plunged to 35 percent, while 51
percent of the respondents said they don’t endorse
the hard-line administration./ 일본 중의원에서 통과된
법안으로 인해 “집단자위권”을 행사할 수 있게 된 후 아
베 내각의 지지율은 35퍼센트로 급락한 반면 응답자의

have exceeded a majority for the first time since the

Since World War II, Japan has upheld its Peace
Constitution with the resolution that it would never

헌법을 고수해왔다/ In retrospect, the self-imposed system
for peace, which boils down to an unflinching vow to
not wage war again, was the key to the miraculous
transformation of the war-devastated country into a
global economic power./ 돌이켜 보면, 다시는 전쟁을 일
으키지 않겠다는 맹세로 압축되는 자발적인 평화체제로
인해 일본은 전쟁의 폐허 속에서 세계 경제 강국으로 기
적과도 같은 변화를 할 수 있었다/ Japan could achieve
prosperity by putting all its available human and
material resources - which otherwise would have been
used for national defense - into economic development./
일본은 국방에 사용해야 할 모든 인적 물적 자원을 오로지 경제개발에만 투입함으로써 번영할 수 있었던 것이다/
And it regained the trust of the world by renouncing
its past./ 그리고 자신의 과거를 포기함으로써 세계의 신

Yet the Abe cabinet chose to ram the security bills
through by taking advantage of the LDP’s majority
in the Diet irrespective of public sentiment against
the idea of Japan returning to any battlefield./ 하지
만 아베 내각은 전쟁을 다시 하겠다는 생각에 반대하는
국민 정서를 무시하고 자민당이 원내 다수당이라는 수
적 우세를 이용하여 안보법안을 강행처리했다/ Even
former Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone - an
icon of conservatism in Japan - said collective selfdefense
was not needed in the current situation./ 보

했다/ It is no surprise that the Asahi Shimbun ran
an editorial comparing the railroading of the bills
to “not just a rebellion against constitutionalism”

democratic system Japan has been building up over

보법안의 통과는 “입헌주의에 대한 폭거일 뿐만 아니라

Japanese citizens look much more mature than their
politicians./ 일본 국민은 일본의 정치인들보다 훨씬 더
성숙해 보인다/ Despite occasional twists and turns in
the country’s past, they have been building friendly
relations with their counterparts in Asia./ 일본이 과
거에도 굴곡진 경우가 있었지만 아시아 주변국들과 우호
적인 관계를 유지해 온 것 또한 사실이다/
Abe’s relentless drive for the militarization of Japan
has dashed cold water on any hope for peaceful and
harmonious coexistence./ 아베 정권의 무분별한 군사대국
화 정책으로 인해 평화적이고 조화로운 공존을 원하는 모
든 희망에 찬물을 끼언고 말았다/ It is not too late./ 아
직도 늦지 않았다/ The Abe cabinet must listen to the
conscientious voices in Japan./ 아베 내각은 일본의 양
심적인 목소리에 귀를 기울여야 한다/ Abe should not
forget that 50.8 percent of Japanese people want him to
include “remorse and an apology for Japan’s colonial rule
of Korea and its aggressions” in his speech on the 70th
anniversary of the end of the war./ 아베 총리는 종전 70
