Report compares lotto sales to winners

The Nokbeon Central branch of Buy the Way in northeastern Seoul appears to be the luckiest convenience store in the country. According to the Korea Lottery Commission, the shop has recorded the highest number of top prize winners per sales since 2008.

A recent report from the commission, operated under the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, showed that the store in Nokbeon-dong, Eunpyeong District, recorded one top prize winner for every 500 million won ($426,553) in sales, said ruling Saenuri Party Rep. Lee No-keun.

One lottery ticket, sold under the name Lotto, is 1,000 won.

From 2008 to 2014, five top prize winners came from this store, and according to Lee, the second-luckiest store is located in Gyeonggi.

The Lotto Lottery Room in Cheoin District in Yongin, Gyeonggi, had one top prize winner for every 800 million won worth of lottery tickets sold in the store.

Ranked third was Golden Lottery Store in Wonju, Gangwon, where one top prize winner came from every 1.3 billion won worth of tickets sold.

Bu-il Car Service in Busan’s Dong District produced the highest number of top prize winners from 2008 to 2014, Lee noted.

The store had 26 top prize winners during that period.

However, with 66.3 billion won in total sales over seven years, that meant the shop saw a top prize winner for every 2.5 billion won in sales.

The store Spar in Nowon District, northeastern Seoul, sold the most lottery tickets over seven years, the report said; in total, about 1.1 trillion won worth of lottery tickets were sold.

“It is mistaken to think that the probability of winning the lottery is higher in stores that have seen the most winners,” Lee said. “The Ministry of Strategy and Finance should provide more data to improve transparency in the lottery business.”
