Heat helps stores sell lots of ice, soft drinks, bamboo mats
Due to the scorching heat wave that hit the nation in the past week, sales of hot weather items have skyrocketed at local discount retail stores. According to Lotte Mart, sales of ice from July 26 to Saturday rose by 155.1 percent from two weeks ago, while sales of bottled water, soda, cooling cushions and bamboo matting increased by 41.6 percent, 39.8 percent, 64.8 percent and 57.1 percent, respectively. In the meantime, sales of umbrellas, rain boots and raincoats dropped 41 percent, 30.5 percent and 56.4 percent from the monsoon period two weeks ago.
