[분수대] 카스텔라와 미쓰비시

부드러운 식감의 카스텔라. 유럽이 고향일 것 같지만 포르투갈 빵을 모델로 일본이 개발한 화과(和菓)다. 명산지는 서쪽 끝 나가사키. 조선인 강제징용 논란에 싸인 하시마(일명 군함도)가 이곳 앞바다에 떠 있다.

 "티끌 하나에도 우주가 있다"고 카스텔라에도 숱한 사연이 담겨 있다. 그중 유명한 게 메이지 유신의 기수 사카모토료마(坂本龍馬) 이야기다. 일본인이 가장 존경하는 그는 1865년 이곳에 가메야마조합이란 해운회사를 차렸다. 이 회사 기록에서 카스텔라 제조법이 발견된다. 돈에 쪼들린 사카모토가 카스텔라를 만들어 팔았을 거란 추측이 나오는 배경이다.

 이 회사엔 경리를 맡았던 사카모토의 고향 친구도 있었다. 바로 미쓰비시 창업자 이와사키야타로(岩崎彌太<90CE>)다. 훗날 그는 당시 경험을 살려 1873년 배 2척으로 미쓰비시 상회를 설립, 대그룹으로 키운다.

 이와사키는 욕심도 컸다. 어느 날 동해에 무인도가 있다는 이야기를 듣고는 증기선에 벌목꾼들을 태우고 달려간다. 섬의 나무를 베어다 한몫 챙기려는 속셈이었다. 하지만 도착해 보니 사람에 집까지 있는 게 아닌가. 필담으로 여기가 어디냐고 묻자 "울릉도"라는 답이 돌아왔다. 분을 참지 못한 그는 집을 불태우고 도망친다. 미쓰비시와 한국의 악연은 이렇게 시작됐다.

 미쓰비시는 정권 후원 아래 급성장하며 일제 팽창을 도왔다. 1894년 일본군의 조선 출병 때 수송을 맡았고, 제2차 세계대전 중엔 세계 최대의 전함 무사시호를, 진주만 침공에 앞장선 제로센 전투기 등을 제작했다. 그 덕에 1937년 중일전쟁 이후 군함 건조는 10배, 전차 대수는 200배 이상 늘면서 회사 자본도 20배나 뛴다. 당연히 강제징용도 가장 많았다. 2010년 국무총리실이 그동안 접수된 징용 피해를 조사했다. 일본 3대 재벌 중 3355명을 끌고 간 미쓰비시가미쓰이(1479명), 스미토모(1074명)보다 두 배 이상이었다.

 미쓰비시가 전범기업으로 악명 높지만 이와사키는 일본 내에선 존경받는 기업인 10명 안에 든다. 치밀한 관리에다 부하 직원을 중시했기 때문이다. 일본 최초로 보너스를 준 것도 그였고 "아랫사람에겐 후하라"는 모토는 가훈으로 전해온다.

 이런 미쓰비시가 미군 포로에 이어 중국인 강제징용 피해자에게 사과하면서 유독 한국인만 빼 비판받고 있다. 세계적 기업답지 않은 일이다. 미쓰비시가 창업 정신을 존중한다면 도의적 차원에서 조선인 강제징용자에게도 사과하고 보상해야 마땅한 일이다.
