'자살다리' 방지캠페인
수년 전 미국 뉴욕의 명소인 엠파이어스테이트 빌딩 86층 전망대에 오른 적이 있다. 영화 '시애틀의 잠 못 이루는 밤'에서 남녀 주인공이 운명처럼 조우한 곳인지라 로맨틱한 분위기를 기대했었다. 탁 트인 맨해튼의 광경은 그럴 듯했지만 시야를 가리는 높다란 철책이 영 거슬렸다. 높이 3m에 위쪽을 안으로 굽게 만들어 추락방지용치곤 과하다 싶었다. 알고 보니 투덜거릴 일이 아니었다. 1931년 개장한 이 전망대가 47년 철책 설치 전까지 30여 명의 목숨을 앗아간 자살 명소였던 거다.
삶의 끝자락이나마 아름다운 곳에서 끝내려는 게 인지상정인 모양이다. 세계적 자살 명소는 죄다 빼어난 경관을 자랑한다. 2007년 프랑스의 저술가 마르텡모네스띠에는 자신의 책 『자살』에서 세계 10대 자살 명소를 소개했다. 엠파이어스테이트 빌딩, 파리 에펠탑, 샌프란시스코 금문교, 난징의창장대교 등을 꼽았는데 이 중 6곳이 다리였다. 접근이 쉬운 데다 서정적 강 풍경이 시리게 아름답기 때문일 터다.
한국도 다르지 않다. 대대로 한강 다리에서 자살 시도가 많다. 이에 2012년 서울시는 자살 방지를 위한 '생명의 다리' 캠페인을 마포대교에서 시작한다. 다리 난간에 다가가면 "밥은 먹었어?", "무슨 고민 있어?" 등 위로의 말이 켜지도록 만들었다. 기발한 캠페인 덕에 아이디어를 낸 기획사는 세계적인 상을 휩쓸었다.
하지만 어이없게 결과는 정반대였다. 2012년 한해 15명이었던 마포대교 자살기도자 수는 13년 93명으로 6배, 14년엔 184명으로 12배가 됐다. '흰곰 효과'라는 게 있다. 미국 심리학자 다니엘웨그너는 1987년 실험참가자를 두 패로 나눠 한쪽엔 "흰 곰을 생각하지 말고 계속 말하라"고 주문했다. 다른 쪽엔 거꾸로 "이야기하되 흰 곰을 떠올려도 된다"고 했다. 결과는 금지당한 쪽이 더 자주 흰 곰을 생각한 것으로 나타났다. 하면 안 된다는 강박관념이 낳은 아이러니다. 자살을 말리면 말릴수록 더 생각나는 게 인간 심리인 거다. 요란한 캠페인 탓에 마포대교가 자살 자리로 소문난 탓일 개연성도 크다.
역효과 논란을 불렀던 이 캠페인이 다음달 끝난다. 이에 서울시는 지난 7일부터 자살 방지 아이디어를 공모하기 시작했다. 제대로 검증되지 않은 아이디어는 빛 좋은 개살구가 될 수 있다. 튀는 아이디어보다는 철책, 안전망 설치 등 물리적 대책이 더 효과적이란 지적도 많다. 목숨이 달린 만큼 신중에 신중을 기해도 과하지 않다.
