Youth joblessness trumps politics
Rep. Yoon Hu-duk, a member of the New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) has come under fire for contacting a local company head in his district to tell him that his lawyer daughter had applied for a position there. The Saenuri Party’s Kim Tae-won is also being investigated by the ruling party’s ethics committee for using his influence to get his son an experienced position at the Korean Government Legal Service.While this isn’t the first time lawmakers have used their authority for favors, the allegations have prompted public outrage. And the controversy is unlikely to subside with youth unemployment in such a dire state. Statistics show that the youth unemployment rate is higher than 10 percent, and even graduates from Korea’s top three universities are having a hard time finding a job at a large corporation. In the past, passing the bar exam would guarantee a stable life for legal professionals, but even lawyers must fiercely compete for jobs.
The youth unemployment issue is an aggregation of contradictions in Korean society. The young generation argues that they have been forced to give up on dating, marriage, children and owning a home because they can’t find gainful employment and therefore can’t make money or save. Their unemployment also burdens their parents, who are often struggling to prepare for retirement. The low birth rate and an aging population are directly related to youth unemployment.
Therefore, politicians need to renew their ethics in the aftermath of this controversy over favoritism. They will only distance themselves from the public if they ignore the plight of the nation’s young people and their parents’ generation. The opposition and ruling parties as well as the government need to start showing some initiative on this matter.
One father, whose child has frantically searched for work for three years since graduation, claimed he would vote for the party that solves this unemployment crisis. When the household economy is in jeopardy, voters don’t care about the pro- or anti-Park Geun-hye camps, or whether we have an open primary or proportional representation.
People’s political standards lean more on how certain pressing issues are addressed. Traditionally conservative “Gangnam moms” participated in the candlelight vigil that shook the Lee Myung-bak administration. The free school meal program - a hot-button issue in the election - and the government’s failure to properly respond to the outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) caused President Park’s approval ratings to plummet. Korean politicians need to remember, it’s the jobs for the young people that matter.

새정치민주연합 윤후덕 의원이 지역구에 공장이 있는 대기업의 대표에게 변호사인 딸의 취업 지원 사실을 알려 비난을 사고 있다. 새누리당 김태원 의원도 아들이 정부법무공단 경력법관으로 채용된 과정에서 특혜 의혹이 불거져 당 윤리위원회 조사를 받는 중이다. 과거에도 국회의원들의 직업 청탁은 한두번이 아니지만 여론은 그 어느 때보다 싸늘하다. 취업 준비생들 사이에선 “권력이 있다고 갑질을 하느냐”는 비판을 넘어 “빽이 있으니 쓰기라도 하지…”라는 체념까지 나온다. 공직자의 일탈을 꼬집는 기성세대의 반응에도 “아빠는 힘이 없어 미안하다”는 자조가 섞인다. 취업 청탁 파문이 쉽게 가라앉지 않는 것은 청년 실업난이 그만큼 심각하기 때문이다. 청년 실업률이 10%를 넘는다는 수치 외에도 요즘은 이른바 ‘SKY(서울ㆍ고려ㆍ연세대)' 대학을 나와도 대기업 취업이 여의치 않다. 대학 시절 내내 해외 연수나 인턴, 아르바이트와 봉사활동을 해도 고임금 직장은 남의 얘기인 경우가 허다하다. 과거 안정된 생활의 보증수표였던 변호사 자격도 이젠 경쟁을 뚫어야 일자리를 잡는 시대여서 국회의원 자녀의 취업 특혜 의혹에 변호사들이 정보공개와 함께 의원직 사퇴까지 요구한다. 청년 일자리 문제에는 한국 사회의 모순이 응축돼 있다. 암울한 청년세대는 자신들을 ‘7포’세대로 부른다. 취업이 안 돼 수입이 없으니 연애, 결혼, 출산, 인간 관계, 내 집 마련, 희망, 꿈을 포기했다는 의미다. 자녀의 취업난으로 은퇴가 빨라진 부모들의 부양이 길어지면서 노후 준비에 차질이 생긴다. 한국에서 특히 심각한 저출산ㆍ고령화 문제가 청년 실업과 연결돼 있는 것이다. 그래서 국회의원 취업 청탁 파문을 거치면서 정치권은 정신을 차려야 한다. 청년 실업으로 자녀는 물론이고 부모 세대까지 고통을 겪고 있는 현실에 집중하지 않으면 국민들의 마음에서 멀어질 수밖에 없다는 얘기다. 나라 살림을 책임진 정부ㆍ여당은 물론이고 계파로 나뉘어 내분을 겪고 있는 야당도 일자리를 못 찾는 젊은이와 그런 자식을 둔 부모의 입장에서 자신들을 돌아봐야 한다. 대학을 나오고도 3년 째 취업 준비 중인 자녀를 둔 한 가장은 “어떤 정치권이든지 취업난을 해결하는 쪽에 표를 던지겠다”고 토로했다. 당장 집안 경제 형편이 어려운데 친박ㆍ비박이나 친노ㆍ비노가, 오픈프라이머리나 권역별 비례대표제가 무슨 소용일까. 정치권에 대한 국민들의 평가 기준은 점차 생활 이슈에 얼마나 전념하는가로 넘어가고 있다. 이명박 정부를 흔든 촛불 집회에는 평소 보수 성향이었던 ‘강남 엄마’도 참여했다. 현 야권에서 제기했던 무상급식 이슈가 선거판을 뒤흔든 적이 있고, 건강 공포를 일으켰던 메르스 대응 부실로 박근혜 대통령의 지지율은 곧두박질 쳤다. 1992년 미국 대통령 선거전에 나왔던 구호, ‘문제는 경제야, 바보야(It’s the economy, stupid!)’를 정치권이 유념할 때인 것 같다. ‘문제는 청년 일자리야. 바보야!’ 김성탁 정치부문 차장
