Former idol star charged with fraud

Former singer Lee Ju-no from the first-generation boy band Seo Taeji and Boys has been charged with fraud for not paying back money that he borrowed.

The Seocho Police Station revealed that the 48-year-old borrowed 100 million won ($85,000) in business funds from his business partner, a woman surnamed Choi, last January.

Lee was sent to the public prosecutor’s office on Aug. 12 for not repaying the money he promised to give back within a week, according to the police station on Monday.

Choi, who runs a restaurant in Eumseong, North Chungcheong, with the former singer, filed the lawsuit against him in April.

In response to the lawsuit, Lee explained to the police in mid-June that he “didn’t intend to not repay the money.” However, the police have transferred the case to the prosecutor’s office, requesting that Lee be indicted.

Seo Taeji and Boys was one of the biggest acts of the 1990s. The other two members of the group, Yang Hyun-suk and Seo Tae-ji, have since become major figures in the entertainment industry.
