Nexen Heroes heat up race for 3rd position

The Nexen Heroes ended their eight-game winning run on Sunday after losing to the SK Wyverns in Incheon 7-3. If they had won, they would have set the franchise record of nine straight wins.

But the Heroes are only one game behind the No.3 Doosan Bears, and there is a chance they could take third place as they host the Bears at Mokdong Baseball Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Heroes will take on the No.2 NC Dinos and the league top Samsung Lions this week. The Heroes are especially weak against the Dinos as they collected only one win in their last 11 encounters.

The race for fifth place is still a tight one among the Hanwha Eagles, Lotte Giants and Kia Tigers.

The Eagles and Giants meet this weekend in Busan. The two teams are tied 7-7 this season.

For the Eagles, the return of starting pitcher Esmil Rogers is good news. They hope to continue two-game winning streaks over the weekend.

The Giants moved up from eighth to sixth as they were unbeaten last week, but their game on Sunday ended with a 1-1 draw against the LG Twins despite having 14 hits in the game.

The Tigers will likely have a tough week as they face the No. 2 Dinos on Tuesday and Wednesday before they play against the No. 3 Bears.

The Tigers have lost nine times and only won four games against the Dinos, but they are 6-6 against the Bears.

The No. 8 ranked SK Wyverns are also hoping to join the fifth-place race. They meet the Eagles and Giants midweek before facing the Dinos over the weekend.
