Kim comes out top scorer at World Cup

Korean volleyball star Kim Yeon-koung is the top scorer in the FIVB Women’s World Cup despite Korea finishing sixth in the event.

Korea lost to Cuba 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 25-16, 28-30, 13-15) on Sunday in Komaki, Japan, but Kim scored 37 points in the game to become the top scorer of the tournament. The 27-year-old, who plays with Turkish club Fenerbahce, had 197 points in 11 matches, beating Russia’s Nataliya Obmochaeva by 36 points.

Kim was the top scorer in the 2009 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Champions Cup as well as the 2012 Summer Games in London, but this is the first time she topped the scoring in the FIVB World Cup. The former Heungkuk Pink Spiders player was the fifth top scorer in the 2011 World Cup.



FOOTBALL

Korea to play friendly game against Jamaica

The men’s national football team, led by coach Uli Stielike, will have a friendly game against Jamaica on Oct. 13, The Korea Football Association (KFA) has announced. The match will be played at Seoul World Cup Stadium at 8 p.m.

Jamaica, ranked 52nd in FIFA rankings, has previously played two friendly matches in Seoul in May 1998. Korea collected one win and one draw.

Meanwhile, the KFA said the Olympic football team (Under-23) will have two friendly matches against Australia. The team, led by coach Shin Tae-yong, will meet Australia in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, on Oct. 9, and Icheon, Gyeonggi, on Oct. 12



BASEBALL

Yoo and Yang team up in new relationship

Doosan Bears pitcher Yoo Hee-kwan and KLPGA Tour golfer Yang Soo-jin are dating each other.

The Bears officials told Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, on Monday, that the two sports stars have now been seeing each other for three months and they are having a “serious relationship.”

Yoo, 29, is currently having his best season, going 17-4 with a 3.08 ERA. He is currently the leader in wins and third in ERA.
