[노트북을 열며] 세브르에서 만난 홍삼 엑기스
2년여 만에 간 파리 출장길에 세브르 국립도자기박물관을 찾은 건 궁금해서였다. 당시 만났던 다비드 카메오 세브르 관장은 “수장고에 있는 한국 도자기를 복원해 2015년 성대한 특별전을 열 계획”이라고 했다. 세브르는 루이 15세의 연인이었던 마담 퐁파두르의 요청에 의해 1759년에 세워진 왕실 직속 가마. 박물관에는 전 세계에서 수집한 화려한 도자기가 전시돼 있다. 하지만 한국 도자기 대부분은 전시장에 나오지 못하고 수장고 찬장에 무질서하게 쌓여 있었다. 저 도자기들로 제대로 된 전시가 가능할까, 반신반의했던 기억.
박물관 입구에 붙은 ‘코레 마니아(COREE MANIA)’라는 포스터에 반가워하며 들어서니 안내원이 “메인 전시는 이미 끝났고, 특별전은 계속하고 있으니 둘러보라”고 안내한다. 올해 초부터 7월까지 계속된 한국 특별전에는 고려청자와 조선청화백자, 한국 현대도자기 등 190여 점이 나왔다고 했다. 상당수는 프랑스 최초의 한국대사인 콜랭 드 플랑시(1853~1922)가 서울에 재직할 당시 팔도를 돌며 수집해 세브르에 기증한 것이다. 현재는 1층에 도예가 김익영씨와 설치미술가 김연경씨의 작품이 전시 중이다. 휴가철이었지만 전시장은 썰렁했다. “한국전에 사람들이 많이 왔느냐?”고 직원에게 물으니 “음, 나쁘지 않았어”라며 어색하게 웃는다.
세브르의 한국 도자기 특별전은 초기부터 말이 많았다. 도자기의 수준도 수준이지만 전시장 해설문구에 ‘도예공방’이 ‘동예공방’으로 적혀 있는 등 낯 뜨거운 실수들이 속속 발견됐다. 도록에도 전문적인 설명 없이 간단한 프랑스어 해설만 담겨 한국 도예문화를 소개하기엔 부족하다는 지적이 있었다. 세브르는 수년 전부터 전시를 준비하며 한국 정부나 박물관 등에 지원을 요청했지만 어디서도 관심을 보이지 않았다고 했다. 개막식에 파리 한국문화원과 대사관 직원들도 참가했지만 한글 표기 실수조차 전시가 끝날 때까지 고쳐지지 않았다.
진짜 충격은 관람을 마치고 기념품숍에 들렀을 때였다. 한국 특별전 기념품으로 진열돼 있는 문화상품이 하나같이 조악했다. 색동과 태극무늬 일색인 연필과 노트, 수저세트는 1980년대 문구점에서도 찾아보기 힘들었을 만한 촌스러움을 뽐냈다. 아무 설명도 없이 구석 자리를 차지한 홍삼 엑기스 병에는 낯이 뜨거워졌다. 서울 국립중앙박물관 기념품숍에 있는 각종 세련된 문화상품이 떠올랐다. 프랑스 최고의 도예박물관에 놓인 이 황당한 한국산 기념품을 보며 관람객들은 무슨 생각을 했을까.
2015년은 한•불 수교 130주년이다. 9월부터 프랑스의 여러 문화기관에서 한국 관련 행사를 연다. 파리 루브르 옆 장식 미술관에서는 9월 19일부터 열리는 ‘코리아 나우(KOREA NOW)’전의 준비작업이 한창이었다. 세브르에 놓인 뜬금없는 홍삼 엑기스를 만나고 온 직후여서일까. 걱정부터 앞섰다. 제대로 보여 줄 것이 아니라면 차라리 보여 주지 않는 게 낫다
