[글로벌 아이] 미국이 선진국 맞나요
얼마 전 지붕 없는 2층 관광 버스를 타려다 '봉변'을 당했다.
2층이 만석이 된 것을 보고 다음 차를 타려 버스에서 내려 가장 앞쪽에 줄을 섰을 때였다. 바로 뒤 미국 젊은이가 나에게 제일 뒤로 가란다. "무슨 소리냐. 자리가 없어 버스에서 내린 건데. 그리고 내가 네 앞에 쭉 줄 서 있었던 거 알지 않느냐"며 버텼다. 그러자 그 뒤에 서 있던 나이 지긋한 노인이 "뒤로 가라고! 모두가 줄 서 있잖아"라고 거드는 게 아닌가. 상황이 심상치 않음을 직감적으로 느낀 가족들의 눈초리에선 "그냥 뒤로 가자"란 사인이 읽혀졌다. 하지만 여기서 물러서면 창피만 당할 뿐. "뒤로 갈 필요 없어."
아이들은 진땀이 났다고 한다. 그런데 다음 버스가 도착하자 이런 황당한 일이. 뒤에 서 있던 아까 그 미국 젊은이가 순간적으로 우리를 새치기하며 버스에 뛰어 올라타는 것이 아닌가. '보복'인지 뭔지 모르지만 어이가 없었다.
봉변은 또 있었다. 얼마 전 100m 앞에서 여유 있게 깜빡이 키고 차선 변경하려는 나에게 끝까지 양보 않고 밀어붙이던 운전자는 창 너머로 '가운데 손가락'을 치켜들었다. "아니, 그건 내가 해야 하는 것 아니야"란 말이 절로 나왔다. 지난 주말에는 시골 고속도로를 달리는데 앞 차량 운전석에서 던진 빈 페트병이 날아왔다. 시속 100㎞가량은 됐을 텐데 큰 사고를 당할 뻔했다.
마지막으로 하나 더. 워싱턴 일본대사관의 고참 외교관과 점심을 먹다 터져 나오는 웃음을 참았다. 외교관이 계산을 위해 신용카드를 건넸는데 종업원이 퉁명스럽게 "오케이" 하며 낚아채듯 가져간 게다. 종업원이 사라진 뒤 그는 씩씩거리며 말했다. "뭐가 오케이야, '생큐'라 해야 하는 것 아니야." 미국 사회의 '비정상의 정상화'에 울화가 치미는 건 '미국 초년병'인 나뿐만이 아니었다.
물론 모든 미국인이 그런 건 아니다. 사고방식도 우리와 크게 다르다. 일란성 쌍둥이만 해도 그렇다. 한국은 당연히 먼저 나온 아이를 형·언니로 치지만 미국은 거꾸로다. 이처럼 생각이 다르니 행동도 다른 것이리라.
하지만 그럼에도 장황하게 미국 험담을 늘어놓은 이유가 있다. '미국판 허경영(허경영씨께는 죄송하다)'인 트럼프 후보에게 열광하는 미국 유권자의 행태 때문이다. 이웃나라 멕시코를 '강간범'이라 하고, 입만 열면 한국·중국·일본을 싸잡아 "미국의 돈을 빼앗아가는 나라"라 모욕하는 후보를 압도적으로 지지한다. 내가 경험한 사례들과 마찬가지로 이건 사고방식의 문제가 아니라 사고 수준의 문제다. 적어도 한국은 허경영에 열광은 해도 표는 안 준다. 단순히 "워싱턴 기성 정치에 지친 유권자의 분노일 뿐"이라 치부하기엔 너무나 위험해 보인다. 미국의 대통령이란 핵 발사 버튼을 누를지 결정하는 자리이기 때문이다. 열화(劣化)하는 미 국민, 그럼에도 여전히 이 나라를 세계 최강 선진국으로 만들어내는 미국이란 국가의 힘, 그리고 둘 사이의 괴리감에 놀라는 요즘이다.
