However, fans are already eyeing the postseason, as the league standings will not change. The teams that will play in the postseason were determined over the weekend.
The Samsung Lions clinched their fifth straight regular season title on Saturday with the No. 2 NC Dinos’ defeat on the same day. The third to fifth places were finally determined on Sunday after the Doosan Bears beat the Kia Tigers 9-0.
The victory gave the Bears third place, pushing the Nexen Heroes to fourth while handing the SK Wyverns an automatic fifth place because the Tigers needed to win all of their remaining games at that point.
From Wednesday, the Heroes will play against the Wyverns in what’s called a wildcard series in their quest for the Korean Series title. Under the KBO’s new postseason format, the Heroes will have home-field advantage and be given a one-win advantage, meaning a single win or tie will allow them to move up to the next round.
The winner of the wildcard series will face the Bears in a best-of-five series that starts on Saturday. The winner between the Bears and the wildcard series winner will then go head-to-head against the NC Dinos starting Oct. 18 in a best-of-five series.
The Korean Series, where the Lions are waiting, is set to start Oct. 26 in a best-of-seven series. In the postseason, extra innings will be played until the 15th inning.
