The 2015 J Global-Chatham House Forum, an international gathering that provides a venue for diplomats, academics and media leaders to tackle peace and cooperation issues in East Asia, will take place from 9:20 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 9 in Seoul.

The forum is organized by the JoongAng Ilbo, JTBC and the Yumin Cultural Foundation, in partnership with the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), an influential global policy think tank based in London. In its second run, the forum, to be held at the Dynasty Hall of the Hotel Shilla in central Seoul, will address “Perspectives for Peace and Cooperation in East Asia.” Participants in the forum include Robin Niblett, the Director of Chatham House; former Foreign Minister of Indonesia Marty Natalegawa; Sir David Wright, Vice Chairman of Barclays; Soeya Yoshihide, political science professor at Keio University; and Steve Tsang, Professor at the University of Nottingham. Minister of Unification Hong Yong-pyo and Hong Seok-hyun, the Chairman of the JoongAng Ilbo and JTBC, will give the opening and congratulatory remarks. The Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Korea Charles Hay will also speak during the luncheon. The three sessions will cover: Regional Security Challenges; Challenges of History; and the Global Economy and its Governance.

Panelists will address the rise of China as it reshapes the security and economic map in Northeast Asia; the tensions resulting from North Korea’s nuclear ambitions; the increase in national defense budgets in the region; and how historical and territorial disputes pose security threats.

Chatham House was founded in 1920 and emerged as a leading independent think tank following World War II, bringing together opinion leaders and decision makers in an effort to engage the government and the private sector.

The British institute, which has strong ties in Asia and Europe, first joined hands with the JoongAng Ilbo and JTBC to host the inaugural J Global-Chatham House Forum in 2014. Prior to collaborating with Chatham House, the JoongAng Ilbo had hosted the J-Global Forum since 1996.
