Nov 24,2015Nov. 25 is the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Chung Ju-yung, the legendary entrepreneur and founder of Hyundai Group./ 11월 25일은 고 정주영 현대그룹 설립자이자 전설적인 기업가가 태어난 지 100년이 되는 날이다/ There are many reasons why we still miss him./ 우리가 정 회장을 여전히 그리워하는 이유는 많다/ He was the type of figure who would suggest creative prescriptions to put our supine economy back on its feet./ 정 회장은 멈춰선 우리 경제를 되살릴 수 있는 창의적인 처방을 할 수 있는 인물이기 때문이다/ Chung was an icon of entrepreneurship as evidenced by his famous phrase: “Hey, have you tried it?”/ 정 회장은 “이봐 해봤어?”라는 말로 유명한 기업가 정신의 아이콘이었다/ Whenever his subordinates were pessimistic about a new business, Chung immediately came up with that reply./ 부하 직원이 새로운 비즈니스에 관해서 비관적일 때마다 정 회장은 즉각 대책을 찾아내곤 했다/ His motto encompassed all of what is demanded from competent business leaders: an indomitable spirit of challenge, inventiveness and innovation, as well as an unflinching determination to push forward regardless of daunting obstacles./ 정 회장이 품고 있었던 좌우명은 모든 능력 있는 사업가들이 본받아야 하는 것으로 바로 불굴의 도전정신, 창의와 혁신뿐만 아니라 어려운 장애물에도 불구하고 전진해 나가는 불굴의 투지였다/ Chung’s dramatic rise to become leader of one of Korea’s most global enterprises owes much to that spirit and those talents./ 한국 최고의 글로벌 기업의 지도자가 될 수 있었던 정 회장의 극적인 등장은 모두 그러한 정신과 재능 덕분이었다/Cases which illustrate his audacity and persistence are aplenty./ 정 회장의 배짱과 뚝심을 나타내는 사례는 아주 많다/ The feat of taking orders for “the world’s largest shipyard” after presenting his client with nothing but a 500 won Korean note featuring Geobukseon - the famous Korean warship that Adm. Yi Sun-sin used in Korea’s war against Japan in the 16th century - was a driving force for Korea to emerge as the world’s top shipbuilder./ 세계 최대 조선소를 짓겠다며 16세기 임진왜란 때 이순신 장군이 사용했던 거북선이 그려진 500원짜리 지폐 한 장으로 선박을 수주한 정 회장의 업적은 오늘날 세계 1위 조선 강국을 만든 원동력이 되었다/ In the mid-1970s, Chung decided to enter construction markets in the Middle East at the peak of the oil crisis despite vehement opposition./ 1970년대 중반에는 격렬한 반대에도 불구하고 오일 쇼크가 절정을 이루고 있을 때 중동 건설시장에 뛰어 들었다/ People said it was too hot in the Middle East and there was no water./ 사람들은 중동은 너무 덥고 물도 없다고 말했다/ Chung said, “We can sleep during the day and work at night./ 정 회장은 ”우리는 낯에 자고 밤에 일할 수 있다 / An abundance of sand helps us make concrete cement./ 모래가 많은 것은 콘크리트 시멘트를 만드는데 도움이 될 것이다/ Water can be supplied from Korea through oil tankers we will build, and the tankers can return home filled with petroleum.”/ 물은 우리가 만들게 될 유조선에 채워서 싣고 오고 나중에 석유를 싣고 돌아올 수 있다“고 말했다/ That’s thinking outside the box./ 정말로 대단한 역발상이었다/ Hyundai’s winning of a tender for the construction of a gigantic industrial harbor in Jubail, a city on the coast of Saudi Arabia, began with such aggressiveness./ 현대가 사우디아라비아 연안 도시인 거대한 주베일 산업항 건설 수주를 한 것도 이러한 공격적인 노력 때문이었다/ Chung earned international trust by completing construction eight months early./ 정 회장은 8개월이나 앞서 이 공사를 마침으로써 국제적인 신뢰를 얻었다/ That began the Korean construction industry in the Middle East./ 그것이 중동에서의 한국 건설 산업의 시작이었다/ An entrepreneurial spirit is a linchpin in the course of nations./ 기업가 정신은 국가 발전의 원동력이다/ When it is weak, a nation has no future./ 기업가 정신이 나약하면 국가의 미래도 없다/ The strength of the United States and the rise of China owe much to the innovations of Google, Apple and Xiaomi./ 미국이 강대국으로 있고 중국이 급부상하는 것도 대다수가 구글, 애플과 사오미의 혁신 덕분이다/What about Korea?/ 한국은 어떤가?/ The index for our entrepreneurial spirit is ranked 22 among 34 OECD nations./ 한국의 기업가 정신 지수는 32개 OECD국가 중 22위다/ When few young entrepreneurs take on challenges, pessimism and frustration prevail./ 젊은 기업가들이 도전을 하지 않으면 비관과 좌절만 만연한다/ If Chairman Chung was alive, we know what he would say. “Hey, have you tried it?”/ 만약 정 회장이 살아 있다면 “이봐, 해 봤어?”라는 질문을 받게 될 것이다/
