Chanel offers discounts but keeps it all exclusive

Chanel, the luxury brand notorious for offering few deals on its high-end products, is said to be providing discounts to its VIP customers of up to 50 percent.

According to the retail industry, Chanel is selling several items, including shoes and handbags from last season, with prices knocked down between 30 percent and 50 percent. The discounted items will be sold in major department stores and duty-free shops.

The brand’s discount event comes about 40 days after it reduced prices on selected shoes on Nov. 1.

Although the retail industry sees the move as merely an annual off-season discount event for VIP customers, it is being held discretely.

The company plans to swap current price tags with discounted price labels, avoiding “sale” posters.

“Chanel holds off-season sales overseas, including in the United States, but it seems the sale is being held quietly to maintain the brand’s high-end reputation,” said a department store official who requested anonymity.

In the sale, a pair of high heels, regularly sold at 1 million won is expected to be offered for as low as 400,000 won; discounts on some clothing items are priced starting at 30 percent.
