KAI gets green light on Surion-based helicopter

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), a local aircraft maker, announced on Tuesday that it has successfully developed the Surion-based Marine Utility Helicopter (MUH-1).

The KAI has been developing the helicopter since July 2013. It succeeded in its first flight in January.

Since then, after eight months of testing, the model’s operational feasibility has been approved by the government.

Mass production will begin after inking the production contract early next year.

The MUH-1 is based on the Surion, a multi-purpose helicopter, with added technical parts. The helicopter has two auxiliary fuel tanks that enable a longer flying range.

The KAI aims to further develop its Surion-based helicopters and expand sales to countries like the Czech Republic, Thailand and Iraq.
