Fans want monument for late actor Divine

BALTIMORE - Fans of Divine want to build a monument in Baltimore honoring the late actor, drag queen, singer and counterculture figure.

The Baltimore Sun reports the proposed marble and concrete monument would consist of an arch perched on top of two marble steps. A photo of Divine would be placed under the arch.

The newspaper reported that supporters of the monument would like it to be built near the Tyson Street site where Divine filmed a notorious scene from the 1972 cult classic, “Pink Flamingos,’’ directed by John Waters.

Howard Libit, a spokesman for Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, says the mayor looks forward to seeing more details on the proposal.

The monument must first be approved by Baltimore’s Public Art Commission. Monument supporters are scheduled to appear before the commission on Feb. 17. AP
