감옥 학교 졸업생들의 용서
‘프리즌스테이(prison stay)’를 아시는지. 절에 묵는 ‘템플 스테이’처럼 철창 속에서 삶의 의미를 깨닫는 감옥 체험이다. 체험용 독방에 갇히면 진솔한 자신과 마주하게 된단다. 감옥을 ‘학교’라 부르는 데도 다 이유가 있는 모양이다.실제로 감옥을 배움터로 삼았던 이는 여럿이다. 인종화합의 영웅 넬슨만델라 전 남아공 대통령이 대표적이다.
10여 년 전 남아공 출장 길에 ‘지옥의 입구’라는 로벤섬 감옥을 찾은 적이 있다. 케이프타운에서 뱃길로 30분을 가니 펭귄과 물개가 노니는 고도가 나타났다. 만델라가 27년 수감기간 중 17년을 보낸 곳이다. 만델라가 갇혔던 독방을 살펴본 뒤 죄수들의 작업장에 도착하자 안내원이 “만델라 학교”라고 소개했다. 만델라가 누런 흙먼지 풀풀 날리는 이곳에서 젊은 죄수들을 불러모아 남아공 역사와 민주주의를 가르쳤다는 거다.
감옥은 만델라 자신의 학교이기도 했다. 그는 교도소 측 독서금지 조치에 항의 투쟁한 끝에 내내 책에 파묻혀 살 수 있었다.
이 땅에서 영어(囹圄)의 몸으로 독서에 골몰했던 대표적 인사는 지난 15일 타계한 신영복 성공회대 석좌교수다. 통혁당 사건으로 무기징역을 선고받은 그는 20년간 책의 향기에 취해 살았다.
같은 무기수로서 20년 이상 옥고를 치른 탓인지 만델라와 신 교수는 썩 닮은꼴이다. 신 교수가 수감 중 얻은 지혜와 생각을 모아 낸 『감옥으로부터의 사색』은 독서계를 흔든 고전이다. 만델라의 자서전 『자유를 향한 머나먼 길』도 세계적 베스트셀러가 됐다.
신 교수가 동질감을 느꼈는지 만델라의 발자취를 좇아 로벤섬에 온 적이 있다. 그때의 감흥과 인종화합의 중요성을 피아노 흑백건반으로 비유해 ‘반(半)은 절반을 뜻하면서 동시에 동반(同伴)을 뜻합니다’라는 에세이를 내기도 했다.

더 눈길을 끄는 건 혹독한 박해에도 둘은 용서를 역설했다는 점이다. 만델라는 대통령 취임식 때 자신을 감시하던 백인 교도관들을 귀빈으로 초대하고 악명 높은 남아공 정보책임자를 만찬에 부를 정도였다. 또 회개하는 백인 인종차별주의자 모두를 사면했다.
신 교수도 마찬가지였다. 그는 자신의 책 『더불어 숲』에서 “진정한 용서에 의해 비로소 역사가 진보한다”고 적었다.
온 사회에 찬바람이 불면서 증오와 손가락질이 넘치는 세상이다. 신 교수의 영면을 계기로 사랑과 용서가 미움과 질책을 밀어내고 모든 이의 가슴에 깃들었으면 하는 바람이다.
