Park to talk with key leaders at security event

President Park Geun-hye is scheduled to visit the United States later this month to attend a multilateral conference on nuclear security amid escalating tensions between the two Koreas over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs.

“President Park will attend the fourth Nuclear Security Summit to exchange opinions on the evolving threats of nuclear terrorism,” the Blue House said Wednesday. “She will also assess the accomplishments so far in the improvement of nuclear security and share her views on continuing international cooperation.”

The summit will run March 31 to April 1 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington.

Leaders from 52 countries, the European Union, the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Interpol will attend the summit. A communique is expected to be adopted to conclude the event.

It is highly anticipated that officials at the summit will discuss North Korea’s fourth nuclear test on Jan. 6, and subsequent long-range missile launch in February, as well as the international community’s efforts to implement and enforce sanctions.

“This will be the final nuclear security summit,” the Blue House said. “From now on, the IAEA will lead global discussions on relevant issues.”

The presidential office added that Park will hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the summit with major world leaders. The details of those meetings will be announced when they are finalized, it said.

Among the regional leaders attending the event are Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

After the summit, Park will visit Mexico from April 2 to 5 upon the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto. They will meet April 4 to talk about issues of mutual concern.

The president and Pena Nieto will discuss the participation of Korean companies in various energy, transportation and infrastructure projects, the Blue House said.
