[카를로스 고리토의 비정상의 눈]왜 지구 반대쪽에서 한국으로 돌아왔을까

며칠 전 한국에 사는 브라질 학생들을 집에 초대해 고국 음식을 대접했다. 이들은 2~3년 전 브라질 정부가 지원하는 ‘국경 없는 과학회’ 프로그램에 따라 교환학생으로 한국에서 공부하고 귀국한 뒤 다시 한국으로 돌아왔다는 공통점이 있다. 당시 나는 주한 브라질 대사관 교육담당관으로서 이들을 지원했다.

이들이 한국행을 택한 이유는 대개 비슷했다. 대개 K팝·드라마 등으로 접한 한국 문화나 한국 대기업의 세계적 명성 때문이었다. 지구 반대편에 대한 막연한 호기심이나 장학금 때문인 경우도 있었다. 이들은 대개 한국에서 많은 것을 배우고 좋은 기억과 이미지를 간직하곤 브라질로 귀국해 본래의 삶으로 돌아가게 마련이다. 그러나 일부는 브라질에 가서도 한국을 그리워하며 어떻게든 다시 돌아오기를 꿈꾼다. 며칠 전 초대한 학생들은 용기를 내어 이를 실행에 옮겼다.

왜 돌아왔을까? 이야기를 들어보니 크게 세 가지 이유에서다. 첫째는 취업이다. 최근 브라질 경기가 나빠지면서 취업이 힘들어지자 자연스럽게 해외로 눈을 돌리게 됐는데 한국은 가장 매력적인 선택지였다. 한국엔 브라질 등 중남미에 해외 지사를 둔 대기업이 많은데, 수출을 많이 하려면 그 나라 언어·문화를 이해하는 현지 출신이 필요하다. 둘째는 한국 사람의 정이다. 브라질 정서와도 어느 정도 맞닿는 부분이다. 친절하고 매력적이기도 하다. 한국에서 만난 여자친구와 결혼하거나 사귀던 남자친구를 다시 만나려고 돌아왔다는 학생도 있다. 마지막 이유는 한국의 안전성과 편리함이다. 치안이 좋지 않은 브라질에서 지내다 한국에 오면 살기 좋은 곳이라는 생각이 들 수밖에 없다. 본인도 안전한 곳에서 자유롭게 다니며 살 수 있고, 부모님도 안심시킬 수 있어 한국을 택한 것이다.

물론 한국이라고 행복한 일만 있는 건 아니다. 하지만 이들은 브라질 특유의 ‘절대 포기하지 않는다’는 정신에 따라 어려움을 이겨내려고 한다. 한국의 ‘하면 된다’와 비슷하다. 지구 반대쪽까지 다시 날아온 이들은 아끼고 사랑하는 이 나라에서 좋은 사람들과 많은 것을 배우며 살고 싶어 한다.300

이들을 보며 내 과거가 떠올랐다. 장학생으로 한국에서 공부한 뒤 귀국했다가 다시 한국행을 택했기 때문이다. 당시엔 정말 많이 고민했고 큰 용기가 필요했지만 지금 생각하면 인생에서 가장 잘한 일 중 하나가 아니었나 싶다. 한국의 매력을 잊지 못하고 다시 이 땅을 밟은 브라질 학생들이 양국 모두에 도움이 되는 인재로 성장하길 바란다.
