Drama writer arrested for fraud
The Supreme Prosecutor’s Office arrested and put on trial a famous screenwriter surnamed Park on Tuesday for committing a series of financial frauds, of which the list of victims included actor Jung Woo-sung.Park has been a writer since the ’90s who wrote popular TV dramas for major broadcasters.
According to the prosecutor, Park had coaxed Jung to give her money to invest on his behalf by telling him she belonged to an exclusive fund group along with many individuals from renowned conglomerates. Park even added to her credibility by mentioning that one of her family members was working in the stock market. The actor handed her his money in roughly 20 separate transfers from 2008 to last July, totaling more than 4.6 billion won ($4 million).
The suspect allegedly has confessed to have committed the crime to pay back the debt worth some millions of dollars she had accrued from recklessly expanding her own businesses.
