Cabinet calls next Friday ‘temporary’ holiday

A long weekend will start on Children’s Day on Thursday May 5, as the government designated the following day as a so-called temporary holiday.

The Cabinet approved the plan on Thursday in order to boost domestic consumption and the economy.

“May 1 to 14 is the country’s travel promotion period and various plans were presented by the private sector to boost spending through leisure activities,” Park said during a Cabinet meeting. “Taking into account those opinions, May 6 will be designated as a temporary holiday in order to boost morale of the people and contribute to tourism and domestic consumption.”

By designating next Friday a holiday, a four-day weekend is created. Sunday is Parent’s Day, although that is not a national holiday.

Park asked the government to do its best to reduce any financial burden on small companies that will operate on May 6 and have to pay extra wages. She also asked the government to come up with a plan so that working couples will not have to deal with disruption of daycare service on May 6.
