Kim must look to the future
May 11,2016We have mixed feelings after watching the closure of the 7th congress of the North Korean Workers’ Party in Pyongyang./ 북한 평양에서 거행된 제7차 노동당대회 폐막을 바라보면서 마음이 착잡하다
Nothing has changed in the North except its declaration as a country with nuclear weapons./ 핵 보유를 천명한 것 말고는 북한에서 변화된 것은 아무 것도 없다
We wonder if the reclusive state has any willingness to join the international community as a mature member./ 이 은둔 국가가 성숙한 국가로서 국제사회에 합류할 어떤 의지를 가지고 있는지 궁금하다
Most of the editorial in the state mouthpiece Rodong Shinmun on the morning of May 6, when the party congress convened, overlapped with its editorial 36 years back./당 대회가 시작된 5월 6일 아침 북한 대변인 격인 노동신문 사설의 대부분은 36년 전 사설과 내용이 똑같다

Granted that the party reaffirmed its platforms firmly based on the tenets of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong-un, did the current leader really have to reiterate a necessity for the country to embark on a “grand strife against aggressions — and interventions in domestic affairs — by imperialistic and domineering forces” even after borrowing the terms Kim Il Sung used to criticize the Soviet Union’s hegemony?/ 설령 북한 노동당이 김일성, 김정일 주의를 계승한다는 기본 노선이 같다고 치더라도 김일성이 소련의 패권주의를 비판하기 위해 사용한 용어까지 차용하여 제국주의와 지배세력에 의한 침략과 내정간섭을 반대하여 투쟁해야 한다고 현 지도자가 되뇔 필요가 정말 있었을까?

Nevertheless, the North is compulsively pouring all available resources to advancing nuclear weapons even when no country on earth threatens its regime./ 그럼에도 불구하고 북한은 지구상의 어느 나라도 북한을 위협하지 않는 상황에서 모든 가용한 자원을 핵무기 개발에 쏟아붓고 있다
Instead of using its precious resources to further develop nuclear arms, North Korea must invest in rejuvenating the economy Kim Jong-un described as “being in a poor state” in his address at the congress./ 핵무기 개발에 소중한 자원을 사용할 것이 아니라 김정은이 당 대회 연설에서 말했듯이 한심하다고 평가한 경제를 활성화시키는데 투자를 해야 한다
If Kim only scraps his nuclear dreams, many countries, including South Korea, will heartily extend their hands./ 만약 김정은이 핵에 대한 꿈을 버린다면 한국을 비롯한 많은 나라들이 진심어린 손을 내밀 것이다
Kim must look to the future rather than adhering to the futile pursuit of nuclear weapons./ 김정은은 쓸데없는 핵무기에 집착할 것이 아니라 미래를 내다보아야 한다
He must aim for a brighter future in which his people praises a great leader for making them live in a better country — instead of galloping toward an uncertain future./ 김정은은 불확실한 미래를 향해 나아갈 것이 아니라 더 좋은 나라에서 인민들이 잘 살게 되어 인민들이 칭송하는 위대한 지도자의 밝은 미래를 목표로 해야 할 것이다
